Club History
Founded in 1883, Petersham Rugby Club is one of the oldest and most storied rugby clubs in Australia and proudly recognised as the original Suburban Rugby (“Subbies”) club.
For more than 140 years, the Shammies have been at the heart of grassroots rugby in Sydney’s Inner West. From the early days of local competition through to the modern Subbies era, the club has played a key role in shaping community rugby in New South Wales.
Throughout our history, Petersham has built a legacy of success on the field, including multiple Kentwell Cup premierships. But just as important is the legacy off it, a club defined by mateship, resilience, and a strong sense of belonging.
Generations of players, supporters, and volunteers have pulled on the Petersham jersey, each adding their own chapter to the story. While the game has evolved over time, the spirit of the club remains the same.
Today, we honour that history while continuing to build for the future – welcoming new players, growing the game, and carrying forward the traditions that make Petersham Rugby what it is.
